Mattie Lee Jerry —
the why behind MLJ

MLJ Foundation carries the initials and the spirit of Mattie Lee Jerry, a lifelong educator and community servant. Her work centered children and families: classrooms and mentoring, food support for neighbors who needed it, foster care, and steady presence through bereavement and homeless ministry.

Her service went well beyond the school day: food for neighbors who needed it, a home and advocacy for foster families, ministry and outreach for people walking through grief or hardship. If a family needed a meal, a ride, or someone to sit with them and help make sense of a system that felt closed, she showed up.
That habit of showing up is the inspiration for this organization — and the standard it is held to.

Service became a family practice, not just a family story

The next generation grew up inside that example — packing food boxes, welcoming foster siblings, showing up for neighbors. What was learned at home became professional work: credentialed Community Health Workers, community outreach, and support for families navigating health, education and opportunity.
